When it comes to matching wine and food the possibilities are endless. Below are some of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail's recomendations for pairing some of our favorite wines with delicious meals and a few of our special recipes for you to try.
The number one thing to never forget when pairing wine with food is to follow your instincts. All the rules fly out the window if you enjoy something the rules say you shouldn't, STICK WITH IT!
WINE & TURKEY - A PERFECT MATCH!
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with friends and family but can also be fraught with the stress of menu planning, grocery shopping and serving the perfect meal. Enjoy some of these helpful tips when looking to purchase the perfect wine for your meal.
• White Wines such as Villard Blanc, Seyval, Riesling and Apple are a great match for Turkey. They are very versatile and pair well with a number of dishes. Look for wines with hints of apple, pear and citrus notes.
• Rose` wines make wonderful aperitif` wines and are a great wine to bring to any meal. A semi-dry to semi-sweet Rose` wine will pair with a number of foods and can be enjoyed by all, no matter how sophisticated or how simple the palate.
• Not serving Turkey. Enjoy some of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail's full-bodied red wines with heartier beef dishes. Chambourcin, Norton and Cabernet Franc are delicious wines that can be found around the trail.

ISLAND BANANA BAKE
2 T. Unsalted butter
8 Slightly Underripe bananas
Juice of 2 limes
1/4 C. Sweet White Wine (ie: Inheritance Valley Vineyard's Roadside White, Hedman Vineyard's Vidal Blanc or Blue Sky Vineyard's Rocky Comfort White)
3 T. Light Brown Sugar
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/4 tsp. Ginger
1/8 tsp Cloves (optional)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Butter a shallow baking dish, reserving remaining butter. Peel and layer bananas in the dish and drizzle with lime juice. Sprinkle with sugar and spices and dot with remaining butter. Bake 30 minutes, basting several times with sauce. Carefully remove bananas to serving dishes. Serve hot with sauce spooned over. 8 Servings
PEARS BAKED IN WINE
4 - 6 Large fresh pears
1/2 C. Sugar
1/3 C. Water
2/3 C. Sweet Fruity Wine (ie: Pomona Winerie's Kir / Alto Vineyard's Cherry Berry)
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/4 tsp. Ginger
1/8 tsp. Cloves
1 T. Fresh Lime Juice
Raspberries or Strawberries and Fresh Mint Leaves for Garnish
Wash pears and peel the skin 2 inches down around the stem end leaving the stem intact. Place in a baking dish. Heat the remaining ingredients together to boiling point. Pour over pears. Cover and bake 25 minutes in a preheated 375 degree oven. Remove cover. Bake 10-15 minutes more or until pears are just tender, basting with juice at 5 minute intervals. Remove pears to serving plates. Reduce remaining juice to syrup consistency. Spoon syrup over pears and serve slightly warm, with a small scoop of ice cream if desired. Garnish with berries and mint leaves. 4 - 6 Servings
