Norton is a red wine variety and widely referred to as America’s oldest native grape. There is some mystery behind the actual creation of the Norton variety. It is believed that in Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Daniel Norborne Norton was experimenting with grape cultivation and produced this hybrid that holds his name. In some regions, Norton is also known as Cynthiana.

The Norton grape variety is commonly grown within the boundaries of the Shawnee Hills American Viticulture Area (AVA).  In the vineyard, Norton is vigorously growing and needs consistent canopy management to maintain a quality crop and ensure fully ripening fruit.  Norton vines are resistant to many different diseases, growing problems and phylloxera (pest of the vines).  The hardiness of the vines makes this variety a great fit for the Midwest.  Norton benefits from the warmer climate, longer growing season, higher elevations and great draining soils of the Shawnee Hills region.

Wines made from Shawnee Hills Norton are darker, fuller bodied and higher in acidity offering concentrated flavors of blackberries and black cherry with earthy notes and accents of dark chocolate and vanilla. Hints of smoky oak and notes of spice blend together with ripe fruit flavors creating an excellent food wine.
